| Name of Program: | Assists Animal Owners & Veterinarians in Diagnose of Animal Disease (Nebraska Diagnostic Laboratory Systems) |
Classification: |
5 |
| Target Audience: | The NVDLS provides veterinary laboratory testing services that assist animal owners and their veterinarians to accurately diagnose animal diseases. Although the NVDLS is used primarily by the major livestock industries in Nebraska, it also conducts certain tests that are used by the State Veterinarian's office, in the implementation and enforcement of animal disease regulatory programs of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. The NVDLS also serves as a monitoring system for some human diseases, thereby contributing to the mission of the Nebraska Department of Health, because some diseases diagnosed in animals are easily transmitted and highly pathogenic to people. Diagnostic services are also provided to zoos, especially for those in Omaha and Lincoln. The NVDLS also cooperates with the Nebraska Game and Parks Division in diagnosing diseases of wild birds and animals. | ||
| Services Offered: | The NVDLS includes three laboratories located in Lincoln, North Platte and Scottsbluff. A full range of diagnostic services is offered including bacteriology, virology, pathology, parasitology and toxicology. Cooperative arrangements are in place with federal and some veterinary diagnostic laboratories in other states, to conduct certain tests that are not available in the NVDLS. Diagnostic services are provided for all species of animals including livestock, poultry, turkeys, pets, exotic animals, pet and wild birds, and fish. When necessary to deal with animal disease problems that are especially severe or perplexing, veterinary diagnosticians visit farms or ranches, often accompanied by an Extension Veterinarian, to investigate the problem. | ||
| Delivery Method: | Farmers, ranchers and other animal owners may submit animals or specimens from animals (tissues, swabs, blood, etc) directly to the NVDLS; however most samples are submitted by practicing veterinarians in behalf of the animal owners. The majority of specimens are shipped in special containers to the NVDLS via mail, bus or private courier (UPS, etc), but in emergency situations owners often deliver specimens directly to one of the three laboratory sites in the eastern, central or western regions of Nebraska. | ||

| Name of Program: | Forest Pest Management (Nebraska Forestry Service) |
Classification: |
5 |
| Target Audience: | |||
| Services Offered: | Forest insects and diseases cause serious problems in windbreaks, plantations, and native forests in many parts of Nebraska. Some pests, such as pine moths of ponderosa, Austrian, and Scotch pines and Cerospora blight of Rocky Mountain juniper and eastern redcedar, cause problems so severe that they are reducing the number of tree species suitable for planting in some areas. Problems caused by forest pests are so common in Nebraska that they account for as much as 25% of the service requests coming from forest landowners. Approximately one-half of all on-site visits made by NFS staff include pest diagnoses or some discussion of forest pests related to the woodland or planting area being discussed with the landowner. The Forest Pest Management (FPM) program carries out specific investigations, and detection and evaluation surveys. The program is directed toward gaining a more complete understanding of current and potential forest pest problems in the state, determining the effects of environmental conditions on these pests, and developing management approaches that reduce the pest damage. The FPM Specialist provides support for NFS field staff in all aspects of pest ID and control recommendations. | ||
